Leonard Nimoy reached the Final Frontier

Leonard Nimoy died yesterday, February 27th 2015, at 8:40 a.m. in his Bel Air home from complications of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). He was 83.

Nimoy was an American actor, film director, poet, singer and photographer. He was well known for his role as Mr. Spock, the co-captain of the famous starship Enterprise, in the original Star Trek series (1966-1969) and in the first six Star Trek movies. He also took part in the latest Star Trek movies, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek into the darkness (2013), playing the role of Spock Prime, of course. With this role his career took off and Mr. Spock became one of the most beloved characters of the last half century. Furthermore, he took part in many other old time classic movies such as Them!, which is the first of the 1950s "nuclear monster" movies, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, for which Nimoy was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor and A Woman Called Golda, for which he was Nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for 'Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie'. One thing that should be mentioned is the fact that he concerned himself with voice acting, and we all probably remember him as the voice of Sentinel Prime in the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011).

Nimoy revealed that he had been diagnosed with COPD in February 2014. He attributed his condition to smoking, a habit that he had given up approximately 30 years ago. The actor tweeted on January 14, 2014 "I quit smoking 30 years ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!!"

'Cpt. Kirk' William Shatner wrote: "I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love." Zachary Quinto, who portrayed Spock in the movies Star Trek and Star Trek Into The Darkness, commented on the death of L. Nimoy: "My heart is broken. I love you profoundly my dear friend and I will miss you every day. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

So, we salute you Mr. Nimoy and we will never forget you. The rest of us, who are still around, remember Vulcan leader T'Pau's words: "Live long and prosper".
