Electronica greats Leftfield return with first new music in 16 years

Leftfield the British electronic project formed in 1989 in London are ready to release a follow-up to 1999's Rhythm and Stealth. From 1989 to 200, Leftfield was a duo of artists and record producers that consisted of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley. The duo managed to notch a couple of minor US dance hits with cinematic "Song of Life" and "Afro-Left" in the mid-90s and now they will put out a new 10-track record titled Alternative Light Source on June 8th. They've also released a new, 7-minute exploration into electronic atmosphere called "Universal Everything" (streaming below), to accompany the news.

The original duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley split in 2002 but in January 2010, Barnes resurrected Leftfield and having toured the world for a couple of years he has finished writing new material for the third album entitled Alternative Light Source. Daley has declined to be involved and is focusing upon his solo career. The new album will be available on CD, available in a four-panel digipak and double-LP on 180-gram vinyl. The LP edition contains a download card for the music. Both releases feature artwork by British visual artist Mark Wallinger.

In the 90, the duo put out two Mercury Prize nominated albums, 1995's Leftism and 1999's Rhythm and Stealth. Both records featured interesting collaborations by the Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd.'s John Lydon on the first and Afrika Bambaataa on the second, though Barnes has not yet announced any potential guests on the new record.

Barnes currently has four tour dates lined up - only in the UK - to take place in June, shortly after the release of the album.
