Vibravoid in zero gravity

Οι Vibravoid είναι μια μπάντα από το Ντύσελντορφ της Γερμανίας και συγκαταλέγονται στους κυριότερους αναβιωτές της ψυχεδελικής μουσικής των 60s. Αυτές τις μέρες κυκλοφόρησαν το νέο άλμπουμ τους με τίτλο 'Gravity Zero'. Με αφορμή αυτή την κυκλοφορία και με δεδομένο πως έχουν φανατικό κοινό στη χώρα μας, κάναμε μια ιντερνετική συνομιλία με την ψυχή της μπάντας, τoν Christian Koch.

Wild Τhing: Πολύς κόσμος χαρακτηρίζει τους Vibravoid ως αναβιωτές της ψυχεδέλειας των 60s. Συμφωνείς με αυτόν τον χαρακτηρισμό; Θα επέλεγες άλλον ή οι Vibravoid δεν κατατάσσονται πουθενά;

Dr. Christian: Δεν είμαι σίγουρος για το «αναβιωτές της ψυχεδέλειας», μου φαίνεται πως δεν υπάρχει σε εμάς ούτε το ένα ούτε το άλλο. Απλά παίζουμε τη δική μας μουσική. Ναι, σίγουρα υπάρχουν κάποια πράματα που μας αρέσουν, οπότε είναι λογικό να υπάρχουν τέτοια στοιχεία στη μουσική μας και σίγουρα οι επιρροές αυτές έρχονται από τη  ψυχεδελική ροκ μουσική των 60s. Όμως δεν τη μιμούμαστε ούτε την αντιγράφουμε, προσπαθούμε να κάνουμε κάτι δικό μας.

WT: Οι Vibravoid συμπληρώνουν φέτος δώδεκα χρόνια «έντονης» δισκογραφικής παρουσίας. Θεωρείς πως η μουσική σας όλα αυτά τα χρόνια εξελίσσεται;

Dr.C: Έγινα πιο ανατρεπτικός. Είμαστε πιο σίγουροι τώρα για αυτό που κάνουμε και για το πώς θέλουμε να είναι ο ήχος μας. Πιστεύω ότι, αντί να υιοθετούμε επιπλέον επιρροές, πετάξαμε από πάνω μας τις περισσότερες από αυτές. Ίσως τώρα η μουσική μας να είναι πιο «συγκροτημένη».

WT: Ποια ανάγκη σας κάνει να κυκλοφορείτε τόσο συχνά νέο υλικό;

Dr.C: Είμαστε μια μπάντα και μια μπάντα πρέπει να είναι παραγωγική, αλλoιώς δεν έχει ουσία ύπαρξης. Η δουλειά μιας μπάντας είναι να δημιουργεί μουσική και επομένως δίσκους, τόσο απλά.

WT: Έχουμε λοιπόν νέο άλμπουμ από τους Vibravoid, το Gravity Zero. Πες μας λίγα λόγια για αυτό.

Dr.C: Το άλμπουμ πρέπει να το αντιμετωπίζει κανείς σαν έναν πίνακα ζωγραφισμένο με μουσική. Όλες οι συνθέσεις έχουν ως στόχο να δημιουργήσουν ένα ρυθμικό κομμάτι που θα ξεπεράσει τη βαρύτητα. Πρόκειται για μια προσομοίωση ενός τόπου όπου δεν υπάρχει βαρύτητα. Επομένως υπάρχουν και διαφορετικοί κανόνες και προοπτικές. Έχει επηρεαστεί ιδιαίτερα από τα έργα του Sun Ra και της ορχήστρας του και βασίζεται στην ιδέα ότι «Το διάστημα είναι ΤΟ μέρος».  Δεν αφορά τη φυγή, αλλά το να βρεις ένα μέρος που θα μπορείς να είσαι πραγματικά ευτυχισμένος. Και αν λάβεις υπόψη σου την παγκόσμια κατάσταση στον πλανήτη γη, κάτι τέτοιο φαίνεται πολύ μακρινό.

WΤ: Υπάρχει κάποιο τραγούδι στο άλμπουμ που να το ξεχωρίζεις για κάποιο λόγο;

Dr.C: Ναι, όλα! Λοιπόν, νομίζω ότι το “Gravitation Zero” και το “Radiation Zero” είναι πολύ καλά τραγούδια για να ανοίξει και να κλείσει το άλμπουμ. Επίσης, το “Eruptions of the Green Sun” είναι ένας φόρος τιμής στον Sky Saxon, κάτι που κάνει αυτό το τραγούδι να είναι ιδιαίτερο για μένα. Τέλος πάντων, γενικά το άλμπουμ ξεχωρίζει γιατί είναι ελεύθερο από heavy metal και stoner επιρροές, που δεν ταιριάζουν στην ψυχεδελική μουσική. Είναι δυστυχώς μια κυκλοφορία μοναδική στο είδος της, μιας και απ' ό,τι φαίνεται δεν υπάρχει κάποιο άλλο συγκρότημα που να παίζει τέτοια μουσική πια. Είναι ιδιαίτερα απογοητευτικό το να βλέπεις φτηνές hard rock μπάντες να αντιγράφουν το στιλ των ψυχεδελικών πόστερ των 60s και να αποκαλούν τους εαυτούς τους “heavy psych” - κάτι το οποίο δεν έχει να κάνει απολύτως τίποτα με το κίνημα των hippies το '60. Οπότε προσωπικά πιστεύω πως είναι μια πολύ σημαντική προσπάθεια να κρατήσουμε την αληθινή ψυχεδελική μουσική ζωντανή και ελπίζω να τα καταφέρουμε!!!

WT: Στο CD, σε αντίθεση με το βινύλιο, υπάρχουν δύο τραγούδια περισσότερα, είναι θέμα χωρητικότητας ή κάτι άλλο;

Dr.C: Ναι, θεωρώ ότι είναι σπατάλη να περιορίσεις ένα CD βάζοντας τους ίδιους τίτλους που έχει ένα βινύλιο. Εγώ σιχαίνομαι τα CD ή το «κατέβασμα» της μουσικής. Οπότε δεν το κάναμε για να ικανοποιήσουμε αυτούς τους καταναλωτές, αλλά γιατί θέλαμε να αξιοποιήσουμε σωστά το μέσο αυτό.

WT: Ποιος ο λόγος που κάνετε διασκευές; Στο “Gravity Zero” υπάρχουν τρεις.

Dr.C: Μερικές φορές είναι καλό να αφήνεις τα πράματα να πάρουν τη δική τους τροπή. Και αυτό έγινε και με αυτά τα κομμάτια. Καθώς ηχογραφούσαμε το άλμπουμ μας φάνηκε λογικό να συμπεριλάβουμε και αυτά τα κομμάτια, μιας και ταιριάζανε με τα άλλα τραγούδια. Οπότε αν υπάρχει κάτι που απλά αισθάνεσαι ότι είναι καλό, δεν χρειάζονται ιδιαίτερες αποφάσεις, απλά το κάνεις.

WΤ: Έχοντας προσωπική εμπειρία από live σας, φοβερή εντύπωση μου είχε κάνει ο αριθμός των πεταλιών και γενικότερα τα πολλά ηχητικά εφέ που χρησιμοποιείτε. Πες μας για αυτό.

Dr.C: Είναι πολύ σημαντικό να αλλάζεις τους ήχους των μουσικών οργάνων με ηλεκτρονικά μέσα και εργαλεία. Χρησιμοποιώ λιγότερα εφέ σε σχέση με αυτά που έχει ένα σύγχρονο multi-effect unit. Μ’ αρέσουν συγκεκριμένα κουτιά/εφέ, οπότε προτιμώ να συνδυάζω αυτά παρά να χρησιμοποιώ ένα πετάλι με πολλά εφέ, το οποίο συνήθως δεν βοηθάει στη δημιουργία ενός συγκεκριμένου ήχου. Το fuzz, το wah wah, το tremolo και το echo είναι μάλλον οι πιο σημαντικές εφευρέσεις που έχουν γίνει σε αυτό το σύμπαν! Βέβαια, ψάχνω ακόμα και το καινούριο Vox Apache. Αυτό έχει κάτι καινούρια και ιδιαίτερα ηλεκτρονικά εφέ και υποθέτω ότι θα είναι ένα καταπληκτικό όργανο που θα έχει επιπλέον επιρροή στον ήχο μας. (σσ. ψωνίσαμε πάλι...)

WΤ: Μια ερώτηση που εμείς οι έλληνες κάνουμε συχνά τον τελευταίο καιρό αφορά την οικονομική κρίση στη χώρα μας, η οποία βρίσκεται υπό το καθεστώς του ΔΝΤ. Το γνωρίζεις; Έχεις να κάνεις κάποιο σχόλιο;

Dr.C: Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, δεν ξέρω τίποτα (σσ. δεν διαβάζει Bild;), αλλά για ένα πράμα είμαι απόλυτα σίγουρος: δεν έχει μείνει πολύς καιρός μέχρι την καταστροφή ολόκληρης της δυτικής οικονομίας. Ήταν αναμενόμενο να συμβεί ό,τι συνέβη στην Ελλάδα. Δεν μπορείς να πάρεις από κάπου που δεν υπάρχει τίποτα και αυτό είναι και το χειρότερο πρόβλημα του καπιταλισμού. Νομίζω ότι μια ταινία σαν το Mad Max, μπορεί να πει πολλά περισσότερα για το μέλλον μας παρά όποιο οικονομικό γραφείο. Δεν είναι φανταστικός ο κόσμος μας; Λυπάμαι πολύ που η Ελλάδα είναι η πρώτη χώρα που θα το περάσει αυτό, αλλά μην ανησυχείτε, θα ακολουθήσουν και οι υπόλοιπες σύντομα!

WT: Παρακολουθείς τη σημερινή μουσική σκηνή; Ξεχωρίζεις κάποια ονόματα;

Dr.C: Όχι. Μου αρέσουν οι Spectrum και ο Baby Woodrose και κάποιοι από τους δίσκους τους. Δεν μ’ αρέσει τόσο η νέα μουσική σκηνή. Πάντα τα ίδια ανέμπνευστα σκουπίδια.

WT: Τι γνωρίζεις από τη μουσική σκηνή της Ελλάδας;

Dr.C: Λατρεύω τους Aphrodite's Child που ήταν μια μοναδική στο είδος της μπάντα με ήχο και τραγούδια στα οποία δεν μπορούσες να αντισταθείς. Επίσης γνωρίζω και μου αρέσουν πολύ κάποια από τα νεότερα γκρουπ, όπως οι Purple Overdose, οι Yesterday's Thoughts, οι Drug Free Youth, οι Snails και άλλα.

Πολλές φορές λαμβάνω link από το Υoutube από Έλληνες φίλους που θέλουν να μου δείξουν κάποιους από τους ελληνικούς μουσικούς μύθους. Συνήθως είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα μουσική αλλά είναι πρόβλημα για μένα γιατί δεν μπορώ να διαβάσω τα ονόματα που είναι στα ελληνικά οπότε δεν είμαι σίγουρος για το τι ακούω.

WΤ: Σχεδιάζετε να έρθετε στην Ελλάδα όπου έχετε φανατικό κοινό;

Dr.C: Ναι, προσπαθήσαμε να έρθουμε στην Ελλάδα τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, αλλά δεν κατέστη δυνατό. Ελπίζω να τα καταφέρουμε να έρθουμε φέτος. Αν τα καταφέρουμε θα είναι φανταστικά γιατί μας αρέσει να παίζουμε στην Ελλάδα και αγαπάμε τον κόσμο της.

Vibravoid is a band from Düsseldorf, Germany and are considered among the leading revivalists of the psychedelic music of the 60s. Recently they've released a new album entitled 'Gravity Zero'. On the occasion of this release and given that they have a considerable fanbase in our country, we decided to have an internet 'conversation' with the soul of the band, Christian Koch.

Wild Thing: A lot of people characterize Vibravoid as a 60s psych revival act. Would you agree with this 'classification' or would you suggest a different one? Or, do you feel that Vibravoid music defies any classification?

Dr. Christian: I'm not sure about a "psych revival" – it looks like there is no psych or revival at all. We just play our music and surely there are some things we like, so it is normal that we have got these elements in our sound and surely these influences come from the 60s psychedelic rock music. We are not a kind of imitation or a copy of that, we try to do our own thing.

WΤ: Vibravoid's discography now spans 12 years and includes a lot of releases. In what ways would you say your music has evolved over these years?

Dr.C: I became more radical. We are more certain with what we do and how we want to sound like. I think instead of adopting more influences we got rid of the most stuff. Maybe our music is now more "concentrated".

WΤ: What is the case with this over-activity of yours in the field of discography?

Dr.C: We are a band and a band should be productive, otherwise it's got no use. It is the job of a band to make music and finally records; it's simple as that.

WΤ: I'd like you to describe your new album, Gravity Zero, from the artist’s perspective.

Dr.C: The album must be seen as a picture painted with music. All compositions are meant to create one piece of vibration to overcome gravity. It is a simulation of a place of no gravitation and by this a place of different rules and perspectives. The album is basically heavily influenced by the works of Sun Ra and his Arkestra and draws on the idea that "space is the place". It is not about escapism but to find the place where you can be truly happy… and considering the global situation on planet Earth this place seems to be very, very far away!

WΤ: Is there a track in the album that for some reason stands out or for which you have special feelings?

Dr.C: Yes, every track! Well, I think "Gravitation Zero" and "Radiation Zero" are great to open and to close the album respectively. "Eruptions of the Green Sun" is an homage to Sky Saxon - that makes this track pretty important to me. Anyway, overall the album stands out as it's free from heavy metal and stoner shit, that does not belong into psychedelic music. It is sadly a one-of-a-kind release as it seems no other group is making music like this anymore. It is so very disappointing to see how the style of the 1960s psychedelic posters is copied by cheap hard rock bands who label themselves as "heavy psych" but have nothing to do with the 1960s hippie movement. So personally I think it is a very important attempt to keep the true psychedelic music alive and I hope it will succeed!!

WΤ: The CD version of the album has two extra tracks in comparison to the vinyl format. Did you decide to do that simply because of the extra space on the CD or is there any other rationale behind this?

Dr.C: Yes, I think it is a waste of resources to limit the CD to the same titles as on the vinyl album. Anyway I absolutely dislike CD's or downloads and this rubbish, so it is not meant to treat these users; it is just to reasonably use the format.

WΤ: There are three covers on Gravity Zero. Why did you decide to do those?

Dr.C: Sometimes it is better to let things happen. This is what happened with these tracks. While recording and putting the album together it seemed logical to include these tracks as they felt good with the other songs. So if there is something that feels good, there is no need for decisions; you just do it.

WΤ: Having witnessed a Vibravoid gig, I am amazed by the quantity of pedals and effects that you use. Tell us a few things about Vibravoid's relation to sound distortion.

Dr.C: It is very important to alter the sounds of the instruments by electronic means and tools. I use less effects as it looks, especially compared to a modern multi-effect unit. I like certain effect boxes, so I prefer to combine these instead of using a multi-effect pedal which usually does not help to create an individual sound. Fuzz, wah wah, tremolo and echo are probably the most important inventions ever made in this universe! Well, I am also looking for the new Vox Apache that will feature some new electronic effects and I guess will be an amazing instrument that surely will have a further influence on our sound.

WΤ: One question that we in Greece lately keep asking is about the economic crisis in our country and its subjugation to the IMF (Int'l Monetary Fund). Do you know anything about these facts and would you like to comment on that?

Dr.C: Well, to be honest I know nothing, the only thing I am damned sure about is that it will not take long before the whole western economic system will break down. What happened to Greece was to be expected – you cannot take something if there is nothing; that's the worst problem with capitalism. I think that a movie like Mad Max can tell more about our future than any financial office – isn´t it a wonderful world that we live in? I sadly think Greece is the first EU country to learn that, but do not worry - the rest will soon follow!

WΤ: Are you interested in the modern rock scene? Are there any acts/bands that you follow?

Dr.C: No. I like Spectrum and Baby Woodrose and also got some of their records. Somehow I dislike the new music; it is always the same uninspired rubbish.

WΤ: What do you know about the greek rock scene?

Dr.C: Well, I absolutely love Aphrodite's Child who were an absolutely one-of-a-kind-band with irresistible tunes and songs. I also know and like a lot of newer groups like Purple Overdose, Yesterday's Thoughts, Drug Free Youth, The Snails and so on. Sometime I get links for Youtube from some Greek friends who want to play some Greek legends to me – this is usually very cool music but usually there's a problem since I cannot read the names, so I am not so sure what I am listening to…

WΤ: Do you plan visiting Greece for gigs in the near future?

Dr.C: Yep, we tried to get back to Greece for the last two years but it was not possible. I hope that we will make it this year; that will be amazing as we like to play there and love the people.
