Sula Bassana & Electric Moon's Dave Schmidt

Από το Δεκέμβρη του '12 είμαστε σε επικοινωνία με τον πολυπράγμονα κύριο Dave Schmidt, αλλά μία αυτός και οι περιοδείες του, μία εμείς και τα προτζεκτάκια μας και η συζήτηση αυτή πήγαινε από αναβολή σε αναβολή. Οι ασχολίες του Schmidt - διάβαζε Sula Bassana, Electric Moon, κ.ο.κ. - βέβαια πάντα ενδιαφέρουν το Wild Thing σε υπερθετικό βαθμό και άλλωστε είναι από τα τελευταία σημαντικά νεοψυχεδελικά ονόματα του τώρα που δεν είχαμε ακόμη φιλοξενήσει. Με τις μανίες μας να έχουν γίνει ήδη πρόδηλες λοιπόν και στην πιο κατάλληλη στιγμή - με δεδομένες άμεσα αναμενόμενες νέες κυκλοφορίες της Sulatron (της ετικέτας του Schmidt) - αυτή η συνέντευξη ήρθε κι έδεσε...

Wild Thing: Πιθανά σου έχουν κάνει την ίδια ερώτηση πολλές φορές αλλά με ενδιαφέρει η - έστω και μερική - στροφή σου από τα ηλεκτρονικά στα πραγματικά όργανα. Προσωπικά δεν έχω ακούσει τις πρώιμες ηχογραφήσεις σου (με τους Solaris, Yttrium και Twilight Network) αλλά φυσικά έχω διαβάσει γι' αυτές. Μπορείς να μου πεις τι είδους μουσική άκουγες στη διάρκεια της δεκαετίας του '80 (ίσως και του '70), αν έκανες κανενός είδους μουσικές σπουδές, ποια τέλος πάντων ήταν η αφετηρία σου για να μπεις στο χώρο της μουσικής;

Dave Schmidt: Χεχέ, είναι καλό που δεν ξέρεις τις πρώτες μου ηχογραφήσεις. Ακούω ηλεκτρονική μουσική από τα παιδικά μου χρόνια. Περισσότερο μου άρεσαν οι Tangerine Dream, οι Klaus Schulze, Kitaro, Tomita και τα σχετικά. Επίσης οι Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Alan Parsons Project κ.ο.κ. αλλά στα 17 μου ανακάλυψα το πανκ κι άλλα πράγματα. Όταν έγινα είκοσι-κάτι το γύρισα στο ροκ της δεκαετίας του '70 και μετά άρχισα να ψάχνω την ψυχεδέλεια από το τέλος της δεκαετίας του '60. Τότε ήταν που σταμάτησα να παίζω ηλεκτρονική μουσική. Στην αρχή των 90s, αφού παρακολούθησα μια συναυλία των Ηawkwind, αγόρασα ένα μπάσο και το '94 έγινα μπασίστας στην πρώτη ψυχεδελική ροκ μπάντα που συμμετείχα, τους Liquid Visions.

WT: Τι σε οδήγησε στο acid rock; Πώς και δεν σε απορρόφησαν το metal, το πανκ ή το Madchester, όπως έγινε με τους περισσότερους στην ηλικία σου;

DS: Το πανκ και το metal τα βαριέσαι μετά από λίγο. Οπότε δεν υπήρχε καμμία άλλη επιλογή για μένα!

WT: Το "Departure" από το πρόσφατο άλμπουμ των Sula Bassana Dark Days ακούγεται σα να βγήκε απευθείας από το κοσμικό συνεχές των Hawkwind (χρησιμοποιώ το συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι σαν παράδειγμα, υπάρχουν κι άλλα...). Πόσο μεγάλος φαν των Hawkwind είσαι; Εμείς είμαστε μεγάλοι φαν, οπότε μην ντρέπεσαι.

DS: Ήμουν πολύ μεγάλος φαν των Hawkwind στα 90s. Αλλά μετά γίναν βαρετοί. Ο ήχος τους ακουγόταν πολύ πλαστικός και θεώρησα ότι για μένα ήταν πιο σημαντικό να κάνω τη δική μου μουσική.

WT: Όσον αφορά τη μουσική, δίνεις την εντύπωση αναγεννησιακού ανθρώπου, καθώς παίζεις όλα τα όργανα σε διάφορα σχήματα και πρότζεκτ όλην την ώρα και ταυτόχρονα λειτουργείς και ένα label. Πώς ακριβώς σου συνέβη αυτό;

DS: Όπως γίνονται συνήθως αυτά τα πράγματα. Δεν είναι μεγάλη ιστορία. Απλά είμαι στη φάση περισσότερα από 25 χρόνια τώρα πια και αυτός είναι πολύς χρόνος, οπότε κατά τη διάρκεια των ετών έχουν συμβεί διάφορα πράγματα...

WT: Ακούγοντας το υλικό σου κάποιος σχηματίζει την εντύπωση ότι δεν έχεις κανένα ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον να γράφεις τραγούδια. Σχεδόν πάντα κάνεις καθαρή μουσική. Θα σκεφτόσουν κάποια στιγμή να κάνεις κάτι που θα ήταν κατά κύριο λόγο «τραγουδοποιΐα»;

DS: Χεχέ, ναι, έχεις δίκιο. Μου αρέσει βέβαια να χωράω ένα σύντομο ψυχεδελικό trip μέσα στη φόρμα ενός τραγουδιού, αλλά δεν βρίσκω συχνά το χρόνο που χρειάζεται για κάτι τέτοιο. Είναι γρηγορότερο απλά να αυτοσχεδιάζεις. Μουσικά αυτή η προσέγγιση είναι περιορισμένη, αλλά είναι επίσης φρέσκια και αυθόρμητη. Μου αρέσει να ηχογραφώ και να κάνω παραγωγή σε δίσκους πολύ γρήγορα. Δεν μου αρέσει να ακούω άλμπουμ που μου πήρε πολύ καιρό να τελειώσω.

WT: Είναι τα παραισθησιογόνα απαραίτητα για κάποιον που θέλει να παίξει μουσική acid; Δεν θα αρκούσε απλά να ακούει πολλή αντίστοιχη μουσική, λ.χ. δίσκους των Sula Bassana ή των Electric Moon;

DS: Πιθανά. Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δεν χρειάζονται ψυχεδελικές ουσίες για να καταλάβουν τη μουσική μας και να μπουν βαθειά σε αυτήν. Αλλά πάντως οι ουσίες μπορούν γενικά να βοηθήσουν για βαθύτερη βουτιά στη μουσική.

WT: Έχεις ηχογραφήσει με μερικούς μουσικούς με αντίστοιχα με σένα γούστα (Vibravoid, Electric Orange, Vespero κ.λπ.) Ακούς και άλλα είδη μουσικής; Ας πούμε jazz, world, folk, σύγχρονους συνθέτες;

DS: Τα έχω ακούσει όλα αυτά στο παρελθόν, κυρίως ψυχεδελική φολκ. Όχι τόσο κλασική jazz και ethnic. Αλλά στη φάση που βρίσκομαι τώρα γενικά δεν ακούω πολλή μουσική.

WT: Μεταξύ άλλων που έχεις κάνει, έχεις ηχογραφήσει και με τους Mani Neumeier και Ax Genrich από τους θρύλους του kraut rock Guru Guru. Ποια κλασικά kraut rock άλμπουμ θα έλεγες ότι είναι τα αγαπημένα σου;

DS: Α, λατρεύω τους πρώτους δίσκους των Can, Amon Düül II, Gila, Faust, Virus, Popol Vuh και των Guru Guru. Δεν έχω κάποιο συγκεκριμένο αγαπημένο άλμπουμ. Περισσότερο ακούω σίγουρα τους δίσκους των Can και των Amon Düül.

WT: Μιας και έχεις το δικό σου label, πες μας αν έχεις ανακαλύψει τίποτα νέα ταλέντα που θα συνιστούσες στους αναγνώστες μας.

DS: Οι πιο πρόσφατοι είναι οι Ιταλοί Giobia. Θα κυκλοφορήσω το πρώτο κανονικό τους LP αυτόν τον Ιούνη σε CD και βινύλιο. Η πρώτη έκδοση θα είναι σε βαρύ πορτοκαλί βινύλιο. Παίζουν ένα πολύ όμορφο νεοψυχεδελικό ροκ με επιρροές shoegaze. Επίσης μ' αρέσουν οι Papir από την Κοπεγχάγη και θα κυκλοφορήσω (σε CD και βινύλιο πάλι) ένα φανταστικό jam σε στυλ kraut rock που ηχογραφήσαμε πέρσι στο Dragens Hule της Κοπεγχάγης μαζί, όλα τα μέλη των Papir (ντραμς, μπάσο, κιθάρα) συν οι Electric Moon (η Lulu στο μπάσο κι εγώ στην κιθάρα και ένα όργανο Casio) συν ο Mogens, ο κημπορντίστας των Øresund Space Collective.

WT: Τι σχέδια έχεις για ηχογραφήσεις / κυκλοφορίες των προσωπικών σου πρότζεκτ, Sula Bassana και Electric Moon; Έχεις ξεκινήσει δουλειά πάνω σε τίποτα καινούργιο;

DS: Μόλις κυκλοφορήσαμε ένα 10ιντσο (You Can See the Sound of Electric Moon) το οποίο πουλάμε μόνο στα λάιβ μας. Είναι ακόμη το άλμπουμ των Giobia (Introducing Night Sound) και αργότερα το άλμπουμ των Papermoon (δηλαδή των Papir, Electric Moon και Mogens). Επίσης θα βγει και το ντεμπούτο ενός νέου side-project, των Krautzone. Μουσικά αυτό θα είναι πιο trancey και kraut rock, με τη Lulu στα ντραμς, τον Onkel Kaktus στο μπάσο, τον Rainer Neeff (Zone Six, The Pancakes) στην κιθάρα και τον Martin (Modulfix, Zone Six) κι εμένα στα synthesizer. Υπάρχουν ακόμη μερικά καινούργια κομμάτια των Sula Bassana, περισσότερο ηλεκτρονικά/ψυχεδελικά, που περιμένουν να τα τελειώσω για να τα κυκλοφορήσω...

WT: Πότε θα σε δούμε να παίζεις ζωντανά στην Ελλάδα;

DS: Χεχέ, δεν έχω ιδέα! Πρέπει πρώτα να βρω καινούργιο ντράμερ. Γιατί να είναι τοόσο δύσκολο να βρει κανείς έναν καλό ντράμερ για να παίξει «διαστημική μουσική» στη Γερμανία;!!

It was December '12 when we started communicating with the always busy Mr. Dave Schmidt, but partly due to his never-ending tours and partly due to our own continuously unfolding little projects a discussion with him went from postponement to postponement. Schmidt's activities - i.e. Sula Bassana, Electric Moon etc. - are of course always of great interest to Wild Thing, almost in a superlative degree, since he is one of the last major neopsychedelic acts of the time that had not up to this point been featured in our humble publication. Our fads (as a 'zine) having already become obvious and at seemingly the most appropriate time - given the immediately anticipated new releases by Sulatron (Schmidt's own label) - this interview is suiting us just fine...

Wild Thing: You have probably been asked the same thing many times, but I'm interested in your partial transition from electronics to real instruments. Since I haven't listened to any of your early recordings (with Solaris, Yttrium and Twilight Network) but of course have read about them, can you tell me what kind of music were you listening during the 80s (the 70s maybe), if you did any musical studies, what got you started in the 'music business' (as they call it) in the first place?

Dave Schmidt: Hehehe, it's good that you don't know my early stuff! I listen to electronic music since I was a child. I mostly loved Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Kitaro, Tomita and similar stuff; also Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Alan Parsons Project etc. but aged 17 or so I also discovered punk and other stuff. In my early 20s I went back to 70s rock and then I started exploring all the late 60s psychedelic stuff. That was the time I stopped making electronic music. After I'd seen Hawkwind live in the very early 90s, I bought a bass and in '94 I played bass in my first psychedelic rock band (Liquid Visions).

WT: What led you to the discovery of acid music? How come you weren't swallowed by metal, punk or Madchester like most people in your age?

DS: Punk and metal are boring after a while, so there was no other way!

WT: "Departure" from Sula Bassana's recent album Dark Days comes straight out of Hawkwind space (I use this just as an example). How big a fan of Hawkwind are you? We are HUGE fans, so express yourself freely...

DS: I was a huge fan in the 90s. But also Hawkwind became boring after a while. The Hawkwind sound became too plastic and making music myself is much more important!

WT: Music-wise you give the impression of a renaissance man; playing all instruments in various line-ups, with multiple projects all the time and at the same time running a label. How did this happen to you?

DS: How things happen? Not a big story. I'm on stage for more than 25 years now; that's a long time, so different things happen within these years.

WT: Listening to your various projects one understands that you are not at all interested in the song format. You almost always go for pure music. Would you consider sometime to do something primarily song-oriented?

DS: Hehehe, yes, you're right. I love to make a little psychedelic trip in a song format, but I don't find the time for it often. It's quicker to improvise. That is very reduced music, but fresh and spontaneous. I love to record and produce records very fast. I don't like to  listen to albums I made, that took very long to finish.

WT: Are hallucinogens necessary for someone to play acid music? Doesn't listening endlessly to Sula Bassana / Electric Moon stuff (for example) suffice?

DS: Maybe. Some people don't need psychedelics to understand my/our music and dive deep into it. But they can really help to get a deeper dive.

WT: You've recorded with some similarly minded artists (Vibravoid, Electric Orange, Vespero etc.) Do you listen to other kinds of music? Jazz, world music, folk, modern composers maybe?

DS: I have listened to all that in the past, especially psychedelic ethno-music. Not to standard jazz or world music. But I don't listen much to music at the moment in general.

WT: Amongst other things you've worked with Mani Neumeier & Ax Genrich of krautrock legents Guru Guru. Which classic krautrock albums would you say are your personal favourites?

DS: Oh, I love the early stuff of Can, Amon Düül II, Gila, Faust, Virus, Popol Vuh and Guru Guru. I don't have a favoutite album. Most heard are some Can and Amon Düül albums for sure!

WT: Running a label yourself, have you discovered any new talent that you'd like to recommend to our readers?

DS: The latest are for sure Giobia from Italy. I release their first proper long-player in this June on CD and LP. The first vinyl edition comes on heavy orange wax. They do a very nice neo-psychedelic rock with some shoegaze influences. I also love Papir from Copenhagen and will release a fantastic krautrock-like jam (on CD and LP) that we recorded last year at the Dragens Hule in Copenhagen with all the members of Papir (drums, bass, guitar) plus Electric Moon (Lulu on bass; me on guitar and Casio organ), plus Mogens, the keyboard player of Øresund Space Collective.

WT: What are your plans regarding recordings, releases etc. by your current projects: Sula Bassana and Electric Moon? Have you commenced work on anything new?

DS: We just released a 10" (You Can See the Sound of Electric Moon) that is only available at our live-concerts. Also the Giobia album (Introducing Night Sound) and later the Papermoon album (Papir, Electric Moon, Mogens). Also there will be the debut release of our side-project Krautzone. This is more trancey and krautrock-like, with Lulu on drums, Onkel Kaktus on bass, Rainer Neeff (Zone Six, The Pancakes) on guitar and Martin (Modulfix, Zone Six) and me on synthesizer. There are some new Sula tracks, more in the electronic/psych direction, waiting to get finished for a release...

WT: When are we going to see you play a live gig in Greece?

DS: Hehehe, no idea! We first need a new drummer. Why is it sooooo difficult to find a good drummer for spaced out music in Germany?????
