Συνέντευξη με τους Skelator

Σκέφτεσαι ποτέ τι θα κάναμε χωρίς σημεία αναφοράς στο heavy metal; Πως μερικές φορές μεγαλώνοντας απαιτούμε από τα πάντα, ακόμα και από τη μουσική μας, να ωριμάζει και να ενηλικιώνεται μαζί μας; Το πόσο εκθειάζουμε την «x» καινούρια κυκλοφορία που σφύζει από ιδέες και βαθυστόχαστους στίχους αλλά γυρνώντας σπίτι ακούμε στη διαπασών Savage Grace; Ότι η γραφικότητα μερικές φορές δεν είναι απλά άποψη αλλά ανάγκη; Το Wild Thing φοράει ξανά τα wristband του, ανοίγει ένα κουτάκι μπύρας και τα λέει με τον heavy metal πολέμαρχο Jason Von Skelator από τους Skelator. Ώπα, ότι κυκλοφόρησαν γαμάτο άλμπουμ το ανέφερα;

WT: Χαίρετε και συγχαρητήρια για το νέο σας άλμπουμ σας, Agents of Power! Πες μας δυο λόγια για εσάς και κάποιες πληροφορίες για τη μπάντα.

Jason Von Skelator: Είμαι ο Jason Von Skelator, κυβερνήτης ο,τιδήποτε μεταλλικού στα βορειοδυτικά των ΗΠΑ. Ηγούμαι αυτής της μπάντας που αποτελείται από true metal πολεμιστές για πάνω από μία δεκαετία, σπέρνοντας θάνατο και καταστροφή σε όλους όσους εναντιώνονται στη μεγαλειότητά μας, τους Skelator. Είμαστε εδώ με σκοπό να παίξουμε heavy metal με τον τρόπο που μας αρέσει και άμα δε γουστάρεις, χεστήκαμε. (σσ. πιο 'true' πεθαίνεις).

WT: Οι Skelator ξεκίνησαν στο San Diego αλλά έπειτα μετακομίσατε στο Seattle. Αυτή η απόφαση πάρθηκε λόγω των αναγκών του συγκροτήματος; Πόσο διαφέρει η heavy metal σκηνή του San Diego από αυτή του Seattle; Υπάρχουν απομεινάρια από τις σκηνές της παλιάς σχολής συγκροτημάτων που ήταν ενεργές σε αυτές τις δύο πόλεις τη δεκαετία του '80;

JVS: Το San Diego δεν είναι καλό μέρος για μια ανερχόμενη heavy metal μπάντα σαν και εμάς. Η μόνη εξαίρεση είναι οι Cage, και αυτό γιατί έχουν τα λεφτά να ταξιδεύουν τον κόσμο, ενώ κατοικούν εκεί. Μετακομίσαμε στο Seattle γιατί οι συναυλιακοί χώροι έχουν καλύτερο ήχο και διότι πληρωνόμαστε. Όσο για τα απομεινάρια των 80s... οι Queensrÿche και οι Metal Church εδώ και δεκαετίες πλέον δε λένε. Η μόνη μπάντα που υπάρχει ακόμα και λέει να δεις ζωντανά είναι οι Wild Dogs, αλλά είναι από το Portland.

WT: Το όνομά σας μοιάζει με ανορθόγραφη εκδοχή του Skeletor, του «κακού» από το παιδικό He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Αυτό σε ενέπνευσε να ονομάσεις έτσι το συγκρότημα; Επίσης, μιας που το ανέφερα, ποια είναι η γνώμη σου για τα παιδικά καρτούν της δεκαετίας του '80 και τα hard rock/heavy metal τραγούδια στους τίτλους έναρξης; Πάρε για παράδειγμα το Saber Rider (σσ. Ως Σερίφης του Διαστήματος το βλέπαμε εμείς). Υπάρχει πιθανότητα η έκθεση στο metal από τόσο μικρή ηλικία, να συνδράμει και να καταλήγει στην απόλαυση αυτής της μουσικής όταν την επανανακαλύπτουμε ως έφηβοι;

JVS: Ναι, συμβαίνει γιατί χάρη σε σειρές όπως οι Thundercats, ταινές όπως το Excalibur και video games όπως το Castlevania, μάθαμε να αγαπάμε το metal μεγαλώνοντας. Επίσης, αργότερα το Beavis and Butthead και παιχνίδια σαν το Doom κράτησαν τη φλόγα αναμμένη. Έγραψα ανορθόγραφα το "Skeletor" τυχαία και μετά κατάλαβα ότι ήταν καλή ιδέα γιατί κανείς άλλος δεν είχε χρησιμοποιήσει το ίδιο όνομα. Το μόνο πρόβλημα είναι ότι πολλοί μπορεί να χαθούν ψάχνοντάς μας οnline.

WT: Πρόσφατα έφυγε ο μπασίστας σας. Βρήκατε αντικαταστάτη;

JVS: Έχουμε κάποιους υποψήφιους αλλά τίποτα δεν είναι σίγουρο αυτή τη στιγμή. Όπως και να 'χει, έχουμε κάποιον που μπορεί να ανταπεξέλθει όταν θα εμφανιστούμε στη Γερμανία του χρόνου.

WT: Το Agents of Power είναι επηρεασμένο από το έργο του Μichael Moorcock και τον φανταστικό χαρακτήρα Elric. Το κλασικό άλμπουμ των Cirith Ungol, Frost and Fire, έχει επίσης παρόμοιο εξώφυλλο. Γιατί πιστεύεις ότι αυτό το κομμάτι της λογοτεχνίας ελκύει τόσο πολύ τους μεταλλάδες και τα συγκροτήματα; Υπάρχουν άλλοι συγγραφείς που σε εμπνέουν να γράψεις και να παίξεις metal;

JVS: Τι είναι πιο metal από δύο μαύρα σπαθιά που μπορούν να καταστρέψουν τον κόσμο; Διάβαζα Elric στο λύκειο και μου πήρε το μυαλό! Είναι απίστευτo, γιατί εν αντιθέσει με τα περισσότερα fantasy o Moorcock δε γράφει ιστορίες του τύπου «το καλό εναντίον του κακού». Τουναντίον, σε κάποια βιβλία οι Lords of the Law είναι εξίσου κακοί - για να μην πω χειρότεροι - από τους Lords of Chaos. Επίσης ο Elric καβαλάει δράκο, φοράει μαύρη πανοπλία δράκου και κραδαίνει ένα μαύρο σπαθί που ρουφάει τις ψυχές τόσο των εχθρών, όσο και των αγαπημένων του. Τέλειο θέμα για ένα σαραντάλεπτο epic metal τραγούδι, δε νομίζεις;

WT: Το υλικό του νέου άλμπουμ έχει μια classic/epic metal προσέγγιση στον ήχο σε αντίθεση με το Time of the Sword Rulers, το οποίο ήταν περισσότερο επηρεασμένο από το speed metal. Πρόκειται να συνεχίσετε να πειραματίζεστε και να αναμειγνύετε αυτά τα δύο είδη στο μέλλον;

JVS: Δεν είχε σχεδιαστεί έτσι ακριβώς. Πάντα πειραματιζόμασταν με τον ήχο μας ακόμα και στις παλιές μέρες του Give me Metal... Το να πηγαίνουμε από το ένα ιδίωμα στο άλλο μέσα σε δευτερόλεπτα ήταν ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά του ήχου των Skelator από την αρχή.

WT: Αρχίσατε το 1998, όταν το παλιομοδίτικο παραδοσιακό heavy metal δεν ήταν καθόλου δημοφιλές. Σήμερα, υπάρχει μια τεράστια αναβίωση αυτού του ήχου και νέες μπάντες και μουσικοί έχουν την ευκαιρία να ακουστεί η μουσική τους και να υπογράψουν σε μεγάλες δισκογραφικές. Θεωρείς ότι αποδίδεται επιτέλους δικαιοσύνη απέναντι σε μπάντες σαν και εσάς, ή πρόκειται για μια ακόμα μόδα;

JVS: Θα έλεγα και τα δύο. Δες το παρερχόμενο trend του νεο-thrash κινήματος. Κάποιες από αυτές τις μπάντες ήλθαν και παρήλθαν, αλλά κάποιες όπως οι Warbringer, oι Toxic Holocause και οι Witchaven τα πάνε ακόμα καλά. Νομίζω ότι το ίδιο θα συμβεί και με το νέο κίνημα του NWOBHM. Είναι στο χέρι των μουσικών να το δουν ως το τέλος. Αν ήταν να ξενερώσω επειδή δεν είμαστε αρκετά δημοφιλείς, θα είχα σταματήσει να παίζω metal ΠΟΛΥ καιρό τώρα.

WT: Πέρα από την προσοχή που η μουσική βιομηχανία δείχνει σε οποιοδήποτε ιδίωμα, τι πιστεύεις ότι χρειάζεται ο κόσμος για να εκτιμήσει κάποιες πραγματικές metal αξίες, όπως το να αγοράζουν δίσκους αντί να τους κατεβάζουν, να πηγαίνουν σε συναυλίες τακτικά ή ακόμα και να ντύνονται με 'denim and leather';

JVS: Είμαι ΠΟΛΥ ένοχος για το ότι κατεβάζω μουσική παράνομα. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που φροντίζω να δω αυτές τις μπάντες λάιβ όταν έχω την ευκαιρία. Αλλά μια στο τόσο θα υπάρξει ένα άλμπουμ που θα πρέπει να αγοράσω, οπότε προσπαθώ να το πάρω σε βινύλιο. Η μόνη συμβουλή που μπορώ να δώσω σε μια μπάντα για το πώς να προσελκύσουν κόσμο να αγοράσει τη μουσική τους είναι να έχουν ένα γαμάτο εξώφυλλο και να κάνουν το άλμπουμ αρκετά καλό ώστε ο κόσμος να ΘΕΛΕΙ να το πάρει. Αν το καινούριο Manowar ήταν καλό, θα το είχα πάρει, αλλά από τη στιγμή που δεν ήταν, δεν πρόκειται. Είναι τόσο απλό.

WT: Η φωνή σου μου θυμίζει κάπως του Μark Shelton των Manilla Road. Υπήρξε επιρροή για τον τρόπο που τραγουδάς;

JVS: Δεν είναι επιρροή για μένα, αλλά μου αρέσει πολύ το στυλ του. Αυτό που μου αρέσει περισσότερο στους Manilla Road είναι τα ριφ. Οι αγαπημένοι μου τραγουδιστές κλίνουν προς περισσότερο μεγαλειώδεις ερμηνείες που «δίνουν πόνο» όπως οι Dio, Gillan, Eric Adams, Rob Halford, James Rivera, Glenn Hughes, Ralf Scheepers, Fabio Leone, Morby. Αλλά επίσης έμαθα πολλά από σκληρότερους τραγουδιστές όπως τους Kai Hansen, Chris Boltendahl, Biff Byford, Udo και τον Hansi Kurch.

WT: Δε χάνεις ευκαιρία να απειλείς τα «ποζέρια». Πώς ορίζεις την έννοια 'poser'; Τον κόσμο που ακούει hair metal, τους μοντέρνους μουσικούς και οπαδούς που δεν είναι σφυρηλατημένοι στο true metal αμόνι των Manowar, ή κάπως αλλιώς;

JVS: Τα «ποζέρια» είναι αυτοί που ακολουθούν τη μοντέρνα εποχή της μετριότητας και δεν έχουν τα κότσια να αναρωτηθούν γιατί. Αλλά αυτό δεν έχει να κάνει μόνο με το metal, αλλά με όλες τις μουσικές και κουλτούρες. Από τους 'nu' Metallica στο 'nu' Star Wars, περικυκλωνόμαστε από σκατά. Πέρα από την τέχνη, αυτό επικρατεί και τους δεξιούς θρησκόληπτους συντηρητικούς ανθρώπους που προσπαθούν να μας επιβάλουν πώς να ζούμε.

WT: Τι επιφυλάσσει το μέλλον για τους Skelator; Έχετε ήδη αρχίσει να δουλεύετε νέο υλικό; Υπάρχει ενδεχόμενο εμφανίσεων στην Ευρώπη;

JVS: Γράφουμε νέο υλικό αυτή τη στιγμή. Έχουμε ένα νέο τραγούδι, το "Stronger Than Steel", και άλλο ένα στον ορίζοντα, το "Temple of the Witch". Δεν υπάρχει συγκεκριμένη κατεύθυνση για το επόμενο σύνολο τραγουδιών, διότι δεν έχουμε ιδέα τι θα κυκλοφορήσουμε μετά. Θα είναι EP, LP ή σινγκλ; Ποιος ξέρει; Όσο για το αν θα παίξουμε στην Ευρώπη, πρόκειται να παίξουμε στο Metal Assault Festival στο Wurzburg της Γερμανίας στις 2/2/13.

WT: Ευχαριστώ για το χρόνο και τις απαντήσεις. Τα τελευταία λόγια δικά σας.

Have you ever wondered what would we do without fixed points of reference in heavy metal? That sometimes as we grow up, we demand from everything, even our music, to grow up and become more mature along with us? That, though we glorify a new album and refer to it as "full of fresh ideas combined with deep lyrics", we end up blasting Savage Grace from the speakers on our way home? That being 'quaint' sometimes is not just a point of view, but a need? Wild Thing is now wearing wristbands and has a chat with Jason Von Skelator of Skelator. Wait, did I mention that they released a kick-ass record?

Wild Thing: Hello and congratulations for your new album, Agents of Power! Please introduce yourselves and share some information about the band.

Jason Von Skelator: I am Jason Von Skelator, ruler of all things metal in the Northwest of America. I have been leading this band of True Metal warriors for over a decade, bringing death and destruction to all who oppose our majesty, Skelator. We are here to play heavy metal the way we see fit and if you don't like it we don't give a shit.

WT: Skelator started in San Diego but then you moved to Seattle. Was that a decision made because of the band's needs? How much does the heavy metal scene of San Diego differ from the Seattle scene? Are there today any remnants of the scenes and the old school bands that were active in those two cities during the eighties?

JVS: San Diego is not a good place for up-and-coming heavy metal bands like ourselves. The only exception is Cage but that is because they have the money to travel around the world and still live in San Diego. We moved to Seattle as a band because the venues have better sound and you actually get paid. As for remnants of the 80s? Queensrÿche and Metal Church suck now and have been for decades. The only band that still exists and is fun to watch is Wild Dogs but they are from Portland.

WT: Your name looks like a misspelled version of Skeletor, the villain from He Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon. Is that what originally inspired you to name the band? Also, since I mentioned this, what is your opinion about 80s cartoons and their hard rock/heavy metal intro songs? Take Saber Rider’s theme for example. Could the exposure to hard rock/heavy metal in an early age, lead kids to enjoy heavy metal when rediscovering it as teenagers?

JVS: Yes, it is because of shows like Thundercats, movies like Excalibur and video games like Castlevania that we have been raised to love metal. Plus later shows like Beavis and Butthead and games like Doom kept the fire burning. I misspelled Skeletor by accident and then realized that it was a great idea because no one else would ever use the same name. The only thing that sucks is that a lot of people might get sidetracked when looking for us online.

WT: Recently your bassist left the band. Have you found a new one yet?

JVS: We have some candidates but nothing is certain at this point. Regardless, we have someone that can fill the shoes if need be for our performance in Germany next year.

WT: Agents of Power is influenced by the work of Michael Moorcock and the fictional character of Elric. Cirith Ungol's classic album, Frost and Fire, has a similar artwork too. Why do you think this literature material is so appealing to heavy metal fans and bands and are there any other writers whose work influences you to write and play heavy metal?

JVS: What's more metal than two black swords that can rip worlds apart? I read Elric in High School and it blew my fucking mind!!! It's great because, unlike most fantasy, Moorecock does not write about good vs. evil. In fact in some books the Lords of Law are just as bad or even worse than the Lords of Chaos. Plus, Elric rides a dragon, wears black dragon armor and wields a black sword that sucks the souls of his enemies and loved ones alike. A perfect subject for a 40 minute Epic Metal track... don't you think?

WT: The material of the new album has a classic/epic metal sound approach in contrast to Time of the Sword Rulers , which was more speed metal influenced. Did you plan that or did it come naturally when writing the songs? Will you continue mixing and experimenting with both genres in the future?

JVS: It was not planned that way exactly. We have always experimented with our sound even in the old Give me Metal... days. Going from one genre to another in the matter of seconds has been a staple of the Skelator sound since the very beginning.

WT: You started in 1998, when old school traditional heavy metal was not popular at all. Nowadays there is a huge comeback of this genre with new bands and young musicians having a chance to get their music heard and sign to major labels. Do you feel that finally there is some justice upon musicians like you or is it just another trend?

JVS: I'd say both. Look a the passing trend of the Neo Thrash revival movement. Some of those bands came and went but some like Warbringer, Toxic Holocaust and Witchaven are still going strong. I think the same will happen with this new NWOBHM movement. It's up to the musicians to see it through to the end. I mean, if I was gonna get bummed out because we weren't popular enough, I would have quit playing metal a LONG time ago.

WT: Apart from the attention that the music industry pays to whatever genre, what do you think that people need to appreciate true heavy metal values like buying records instead of downloading them, going to gigs regularly or even dressing in denim and leather?

JVS: I am VERY guilty of downloading music illegally. That is why I make sure to go to see those bands live when I have the chance. But every once in a while there will be and album that I have to buy so I try to get it on vinyl. The only advice I can give other bands on how to make people want to buy your music is to have a bad ass album cover and make the album good enough for people to WANT to buy it. If the new Manowar album was actually good I would have bought it, but since it was not, I won't. It's quite simple really.

WT: Your voice somehow reminds me of Mark Shelton's, the singer of Manilla Road. Is he an influence on the way you sing?

JVS: He is not a vocal inspiration of mine but I do like his style a lot. My favorite aspect of Manilla Road is the riffs. My favorite singers are a lot more majestic and soaring like Dio, Ian Gillan, Eric Adams, Rob Halford, James Rivera, Glenn Hughes, Ralf Scheepers, Fabio Leone and Morby. But I also learned a lot from rougher singers as well like Kai Hansen, Chris Boltendahl, Biff Byford, Udo and Hansi Kursch.

WT: You don't miss any chance to 'threat' posers. What are posers to you? People into hair metal, modern metal musicians and fans not forged on Manowar's true metal anvil or something else?

JVS: Posers are those who follow the modern age of mediocrity and do not dare to question why. But this does not just apply to metal, it applies to all music and culture. From nu-Metallica to nu-Star Wars, we are surrounded by total bullshit. Beyond art this also applies to religious right wing conservatives trying to tell us how to live our lives.

WT: What does the future hold for Skelator? Have you already started working on new material? Is there any chance you will do a European tour?

JVS: We are in songwriting mode as we speak. We have a new song, "Stronger Than Steel" and a newer one on the horizon, "Temple of the Witch". There is no dedicated direction for our next set of songs because we have no idea what we will release next, EP, LP, single??? As for going to Europe, we are playing at the Metal Assault Festival in Wurzburg Germany on Feb. 2nd 2013.

WT: Thanks for your time and effort. Last words are yours.
